Biography

Khaled E. Ahmed joined the University of Melbourne as an Associate Professor of Restorative Dentistry & General Practice in February 2024. He is also appointed by the Dental Council of New Zealand as a Dental Educator and collaborates with the Australian Dental Association to create bespoke educational programs and assessments, mapped against the professional standards, to support dental practitioners undergoing their fitness to practise assessment (notifications). Khaled also led the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons Clinical Examination Techniques and Dental Imaging CPD Masterclass, and is an examiner for the RACDS. Khaled is an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Dentistry. In 2022, he was also appointed, as one of thirteen leaders in oral health, to the Royal College of Surgeons of England Global Oral Health Committee. Before that, Khaled was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Prosthodontics and Internationalisation Lead at Griffith University (2018 - 2023), and Assistant Dean (Undergraduate Education) and Programme Director/Head of Operative Dentistry at the University of Hong Kong between 2014 - 2018. 

Khaled completed his prosthodontics Fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Clinical Masters degree in restorative dentistry from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. While teaching restorative dentistry as a Clinical Academic Fellow at the University of Glasgow Dental School and Hospital, Khaled completed his PhD in 3D technology and tooth wear and a postgraduate certificate in academic practice. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Surgery and the Faculty of General Dental Practice at the Royal College of Surgeons (England), and a Fellow of the UK’s College of General Dentistry. In addition, Khaled was awarded a Master of Laws degree specialising in Medical Law and Ethics with merit from the University of Edinburgh. In recognition of his leadership in learning and teaching, in 2021, the UK's Higher Education Academy awarded Khaled its Senior Fellowship. The International College of Dentists has also awarded Khaled its Fellowship in recognition of his leadership and services to dentistry in Australasia.

Khaled's research background and expertise are in Digital Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Tooth wear, and Dental Education with over 30 peer-reviewed, high-impact publications, several internal and external, competitive research grant awards, and national and international guest speaker invitations. His research is in the top 5% of outputs covered by Altmetrics. He is also a peer reviewer for the Journal of Prosthodontic Research, the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, and the Journal of Prosthodontics, amongst others. He is in the top 1% of reviewers worldwide. He is a grant reviewer for several national research grant awarding bodies including Australia, France, and Serbia.Â
